Tarot: Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: Where did Tarot come
from? A: Though some researchers
used to believe Tarot originated in Ancient Egypt, the first known Tarot
deck was painted in Renaissance Italy. Later, printed copies were available
and used as a card game – much as we use a normal pack of cards today. At
what point it became a method for divination is not really known. Q: How do Online Tarot
Readings Work? A: All communication is
energy – and energy can be accessed and transferred by the power of intention
(will). So before I start a reading I
use my intention to establish my connections – just like a phone call – between
myself, my Guide and your Guide etc and information is passed down the line.
I believe the Guides act to intensify the energy and ease the connections –
like a booster box! Of course, the
intention is always positive – I don’t make negative or judgemental
statements in the readings. Q: What do the pictures/symbols on Tarot cards mean? A: The pictures on Tarot
cards primarily depict archetypes. Simply put, it is with the archetype that
people examine their journey through life either as a condition or a role ie
birth, death, wife, teacher etc. Plus there are a range of other symbols
depending on the tradition the pack follows: for example the Rider
Waite cards have astrological and alchemical symbols on them; an
Ancient Egyptian pack uses Egyptian iconography; animal Tarot packs use
animal symbolism in often Native American or Celtic traditions etc. These
symbols are used to relate to the archetype or experience the card is
describing, they add another layer to the interpretation and are used to
trigger further intuitions from the Reader.
Q: Why is Tarot useful to us? A: Tarot is both a powerful
meditation and self-development tool – a valuable way of reaching the
subconscious. It can help us explore states of mind; pinpoint the reasons
behind repeating life patterns; and identify hidden skills and talents. And
of course it can also help us cut through the everyday clutter in our minds
in order to find new focus to deal with problematic issues. Q: Can Tarot tell the future? A: Tarot does not tell
the future. A skilled Reader will
see patterns in the cards which may suggest the path ahead for a given
situation at that particular point in time, however any slight change in
direction, whether through action or thought, from the Querient can and will
change the forecast outcome. A good Q: Are the Cards magic? A: The “supernatural”
source accessed when a reader consults the cards is simply their own
heightened intuition – and, depending on the beliefs or skills of the Reader,
this may then be combined with clairvoyance, listening to spirit guides,
angels etc. The cards themselves are simply (albeit fascinating) bits of
paper with no inherent magical value.
For completion though, it is worth adding here, that some people may
use the cards to help them find focus for magical rituals and
meditations. Again, because the cards
depict archetypes, they are evocative of the experience or feeling that is
required by the ritual or meditation – a photograph, painted picture or
another object of focus could equally be used. Q: Do I need to shuffle the cards before a reading? A: Tarot Readers will often
pick up on the energy of the person requesting the reading which is often why
they may prompt a Querient to pick up the cards and shuffle them (to transfer
their own energy to the cards). This is a form of psychometry. Some Readers
like to use this method in addition to their intuition – others may look to
other skills ie clairvoyance or precognition.
Equally some Readers will request that the Querient does not
touch the cards in order not to break down the energy that they have
transferred to their own cards over time.
Picking up on the energy of the Querient in order to aid a reading is
a process which naturally occurs when the Reader heightens their intuition –
the Querient does not need to be present for this to occur. All Readers work
in different ways – and respect should be given to all. Q: Do the cards have to be laid out in a particular spread? A: No. Again, Readers work
in different ways. Some will use a
particular spread and pore over it slowly looking at each card and
combination of cards as they go; others will turn up one card at a time;
still others will throw down many cards seemingly willy-nilly talking all the
time. All are valid ways of reading
and depend on the experience, style and other skills the Reader is bringing
to the process. Q: Are the Cards evil? Can they forecast Death? A: Unfortunately this myth
still exists and has a lot to do with the way the Cards are represented in
movies and books or due to the spread of misinformation. As said above: Tarot
cards are simply pieces of paper with pictures printed on them – they hold no
inherent magical value – good or bad.
However the intention of the person using the cards is critical. If an “evil” person chooses to use the
cards in a negative way – there is nothing to stop them apart from their own
conscience – but the cards cannot “create” evil behaviour just by their use. Another issue which may perpetuate this
myth is that there are some Cards which have “scary” pictures on them eg Death
or The Tower. These
cards do not foretell disaster – nor do they create disaster – they simply
show that change is a necessary part of life.
If you ever have a reading from someone who tells you death or
destruction is coming – walk away – they are in it for a power trip,
money-making or else simply inexperienced – don’t take any notice – and don’t
give them your money! Q: Do you have to look after/use your cards in a special way? A: Yes… and No! If you want to get the best from your
readings with the cards – its nice to treat the cards with respect. Putting them somewhere safe where they
won’t get mixed up with your child’s Yu-Gi-Oh cards is important! And keeping them in a protective wrapping –
whether the original box they came in, drawstring bag or special drawer will
keep them looking their best. But you don’t have to wrap them in silk,
place them in a wooden box and place various crystals over them - unless
you want to. Likewise, you don’t have to light incense or candles,
invoke Spirit or meditate before you start – but you can if you like!
If a little ritual helps to get you into the right state of mind when you go
to read them ie to focus your intention (to concentrate) - go for it. The cards aren’t magic – it is up to you to
find out how you like to treat them and how you like to use them. Experiment
– use your intuition – until you find a method that works for you. |
